Teens Abuse Drugs to Enchance Life
Desiree Villatoro
Teens use drugs everyday knowing that it can be very abusive in their lives and harm their bodies also influencing others.
How many teens fall into being another statistic of death by overdose? Why are teens using drugs and how many? There are many different types of drugs each with its own different effects. What lures teens into using drugs and what are the real dangers of using drugs? The most commonly known drug would probably be marijuana, but this is not the only drug. The list is long.
A study by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that less than 1 in 5 high school seniors are current users of marijuana. Marijuana is associated with many different names weed, pot, dope, chronic, Mary Jane, etc. There is a lot of controversy about marijuana and its “medicinal” properties, but it’s hard to debate that marijuana is the U.S.’s no.1 cash crop. The short term effects of marijuana are increased heart rate; problems with memory, distorted perception, and the blood vessels open wider making the eyes look red. There are different ways of smoking marijuana. You can smoke marijuana through a bong, joint, or a vaporizer. A freshman at South Gate High School said he would smoke some all the time with his friend before the beginning of school. “We would always meet up before school and just walk around the streets, smoking the weed in a blunt before we went to school”. He said, “I smoked weed because it felt good and made me relax…after a while I stopped because I thought I needed a break from all the smoke…” A former student from South Gate Middle School age 15, said “one time I had a big dime of weed, I made a pipe using a pen… me and all my other friends got together in the middle of the track and smoked it while one of the coordinators was walking the track… it was so awesome…” He said he also used computer cleaner to get high.
The drug ecstasy is known for being used at parties or raves. Known by “X”, “Adam”, and “ecstasy” the drug is used to promote euphoria and dancing for long periods of time. With the heat at parties and dancing the user can die from dehydration. The effects of ecstasy can be increased physical energy, emotional warmth, chills, blurred vision, etc. A study in 2005 by ‘Monitoring the Future’ stated that “2.8% of eighth graders, 4.0% of tenth graders, and 5.4% of twelfth graders reported lifetime use of MDMA”. The pills can be mixed with other types of drugs in labs; they also have fun characters printed to make them look more “user friendly”.
Heroine, first synthesized in 1874 from morphine for use in medicine is brought to the U.S. from Mexico and its purity can differ. It can be injected through a needle, snorted, or smoked. Most recently it has been smoked by the majority of heroine users. The effect of using heroine can be increased euphoria, can cause drowsiness, etc. A survey by ‘National survey on drug use and health’ found that “In 2008, 453,000 Americans age 12 and older had abused heroin at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.”
It’s not much of a surprise to see drugs around teenagers. Some teens might be users and might not stand out as stigmas attached to “pot-heads.” The trend only grows more and more with the number of drugs being sold. Getting caught with any controlled substance can result in jail time, fines, and classes to control addiction problems. It would be wise not to be pressured into using drugs.
